Do You Have a Champions Mindset? I Learned This From Tommy Hopkins

If you have been a realtor or a business owner over the last three decades, you’ve likely heard of Tom Hopkins. He’s one of the most successful sales trainers of all time. Tom dropped out of college at 19 and got into real estate. His first mentor took him to a California neighborhood three miles from the office and left him there. He said, “Tom, business isn’t going to come to you. You need to go to it. Knock on one hundred doors and you’ll end up with a qualified customer.” Tom hated knocking on strangers’ doors and didn’t even know what to say. But he did it anyway (because that’s what champions do), and after knocking on the 64th door, he got a customer and his first listing. He took great care of that couple who listed their home. Later, they would say that Tom was an answer to their prayers. Tom let everyone in that neighborhood know he was the realtor who sold that house, but building a business is typically slow and painful. Over the next four years, Tom worked his backside off. He was the first to go into the office and the last to leave. He networked with everyone who would talk with him and created relationships with the most successful realtors in town so he could learn from them. Tom believes that having mentors is an essential key to success. Eventually, Tom figured out his CHAMPIONS formula, which allowed him to sell 365 homes

Man sitting with his head in his hands experiencing fear and dread.

Overcoming The Fear Of Fear

If you live in the US, I hope you had a great 4th of July last week! Today’s note of inspiration… We’ve all experienced that sudden rush of dread, the pit in our stomachs, and the quickening heartbeat. Fear is a universal human experience but becomes a constant companion for some, even when there’s no apparent threat. Today, we explore the concept of being afraid of fear itself and offer insights on how to break free from this debilitating cycle. Many of us live with an underlying anxiety about potential future problems — financial struggles, family issues, or professional setbacks. Sometimes, fear strikes unexpectedly, even during seemingly perfect moments. This phenomenon often stems from deep-seated beliefs about our safety and worthiness of happiness. The fear of fear can be particularly debilitating. Even after we’ve learned to handle life’s challenges rationally, our bodies may still react with fight-or-flight responses. This disconnect between our logical understanding and bodily reactions can be frustrating and confusing. I often feared something terrible would happen, even when I didn’t know what that “bad thing” was. Usually, it was the fear of not having enough money to cover bills. Other times, it was the fear of my kids getting hurt, my marriage falling apart, or not being able to reach my professional goals. But then there were times when I’d be driving down the highway on a beautiful sunny day and suddenly feel a rush of sickness in my gut for no apparent reason. The fear would start in

Are You Obsessed With Running Out Of Money?

I’ve battled the fear of running out of money for much of my adult life, and being a business owner has only increased the pressure and uncertainty. Even when developing mental toughness and the self-discipline to face whatever challenges continually come my way, that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach still occasionally hits me like a tidal wave. Part of that is because I’m constantly pushing the limits of my comfort zone, like opening office locations in Los Angeles and Florida, and I am not reliant on everything else needing to go in a specific direction to feel safe after losing 90% of my business during the pandemic. I’ve trained my brain to believe that “things always turn out well for me in the end,” and thus far, this has been my experience. That empowering belief keeps me motivated and productive, which ultimately produces the desired results, so it’s not just that I have an optimistic attitude. I also do the work which has helped me become internally secure. My source of power originates from within and I am not reliant on everything else needing to go a specific direction to feel safe, since most of the time that doesn’t happen. When you have an external sense of power, you rely on outside forces to make you feel powerful or secure. Fame, status, and money validate your worth, and when those items fail to meet your expectations, an identity crisis or mental breakdown ensues. Over the last week, I

5 Eye-Opening Tips to Discover Your Blind Spots and Boost Success

Today, let’s talk about something that we all have but rarely see — our blind spots. Have you ever been cruising down the highway, decided to merge into the other lane, and suddenly swerved back because there was a car next to you that you didn’t see? That’s always a fun jolt to the heart (for you and the other driver!) We call that “having someone in our blind spot” because we can’t see them, even though they are there. We also have those pesky blind spots in our personal and professional lives, and they keep us from achieving our goals and having more inner peace. Those who acknowledge their blind spots can more quickly identify what they are and how to resolve them. Those who do not tend to blame others because of ego or a lack of self-awareness or spend tremendous energy solving the wrong problems while stressing out those around them. Imagine diligently pouring water into a bucket, day in and day out, trying every possible method to increase the amount of water in your bucket. Yet, the water level drops significantly at the end of each day regardless of how much you’ve added. You install a fancy new hose, upgrade your faucet, and even perform a rain dance or two. But no matter what you do, the water level in that darn bucket just won’t rise. Then, a neighbor walks by one day, looks down into your bucket with a magnifying glass, and says, “Hey, did you know

10 Tips For Being An Awesome Dad

In honor of Father’s Day, here are 10 tips for being a great dad! 1. Be Present! This one is #1 for a reason. Put down your phone, turn off the TV, and give your kids your full attention and energy when you’re with them. If you don’t have enough energy after work to give your kids the attention they deserve, stop working so hard. When they are all grown up you’ll regret not spending that time with them. 2. Embrace the Dad jokes. Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself – act out voices, do impersonations, turn chores into silly games, and show off your best dance moves. Laughter really is the best parenting medicine. Just don’t take yourself too seriously unless you want to raise kids that turn into uptight, stressed-out adults. 3. Piggyback on Their Interests. Whether it’s dinosaurs, magic tricks, or the latest TikTok dances, immerse yourself in your kid’s world. Kids love sharing what fascinates them with a willing audience (aka you). Even if you don’t like playing with dolls or listening to the music they love, they will love you for doing it. 4. Schedule Regular One-on-One Time. Kids thrive on that undivided attention. Schedule regular dates or hangouts with each kid to make them feel special. (This is also wise to do with their mother!) 5. Don’t Be Afraid to Discipline. Boundaries and rules create security. Don’t shy away from laying down the law when needed. You are not their buddy. You are

Healthy Skepticism Is Wise In A World Full Of Bad Advice

Knock-knock-knock-knock-knock… That was the sound the engine in my car made as I completed my road trip from Los Angeles to Orlando. Before making the 3,000-mile journey, I went to a Jiffy Lube in California to get my oil changed and was concerned that perhaps they hadn’t added enough oil as the knocking sounded like a piston. So I took the car to a local Jiffy Lube in Orlando and met with a mechanic who confidently explained how he was different from an oil technician. Then he popped the hood of my car, put his ear to the engine, and said, “I think you’ve got a timing chain problem and that’s going to run you about $1700 to fix it.” Then he asked, “What kind of oil do you have in here?” I replied, “Semi-synthetic.” The mechanic said, “That might be the issue because you should only use full synthetic oil or you’ll keep having problems like this.” Suddenly, I felt like I had done something wrong, even though the dealership I purchased the car from said that semi-synthetic oil was best. My Lincoln only has 30,000 miles on it. Thus, so if this was a mechanical issue it should be under warranty. So I located a Lincoln dealership and after their inspection, they said, “Your timing chain is fine. There is a crack in a plate between the engine and transmission that needs replacing and it will be covered under the warranty. Then I asked, “What type of oil

Are You Playing To Win Or Not Lose?

I just completed the first 30 hours of my 48-hour drive from Hollywood to Disney World. If you haven’t read my posts lately, I’m in the middle of moving one of my offices from Los Angeles to Orlando. My home and business are based in Indiana, and I arrived here at 1 a.m. this morning. I’ll hit the road again this weekend. I’m looking forward to that trip because my oldest son is home from college and coming with me. Yay! Two years ago, after the pandemic tried to wipe out my business, I made a courageous (or crazy) decision to head west to create new opportunities. I accomplished that mission, yet it was one of the most stressful experiences of my life. If things could go wrong, they did, and it felt like I was always climbing uphill. But that climb made me stronger. Now, it feels like I can do anything. I felt that way before, but not like this because I’d never leaped that far out of my comfort zone, which is saying a lot because I’m always pushing limits. It took 16 hours to sell, donate, throw away, and clean the office space in LA. It’s astounding how much stuff is accumulated in two years. Exhausted from climbing a staircase all day, I slept on an air mattress in the middle of an empty office for a few hours and then hit the road at 4 am for my 30-hour drive. My dog, Spot, drove to

Have A Good Time!

So, my wife and I were at this Hallmark store the other day, looking for a card to go with a gift we got. The place had that classic Hallmark vibe, you know? And we lost track of time playing with the various musical ornaments displayed, even though Christmas is eight months away. Anyway, we picked out a card and handed it to the super-friendly young clerk at the counter. He bagged the card and printed the receipt, and instead of saying the usual “thanks” or “have a good day,” he said, “Have a good time!” My wife and I smiled at each other and reflexively said, “You too.” As we walked to the car, we burst out laughing. It was such an unusual comment, and it still cracks us up when we recall it. In fact, my wife suggested I write a newsletter and blog about it, and since she is wicked smart, here we are. I’m always thinking about newsletters because I write so many of them and seek wisdom, inspiration, or a bit of humor to share. (I hope you find all of those in this one.) While driving home from the Hallmark store, I thought about what that clerk said. Are we really making an effort to have a good time? Or are we just going through the motions, getting caught up in all the daily stresses and worries? Most are trying to just get through the next frustrating, scary, or upsetting situation. We are surviving

Shooting the new film, Zero Limits, with Joe Vitale.

Life is anything but boring…

Last month, I shot my portion of an upcoming movie, Zero Limits, which will be released on Amazon and Apple TV in January 2025. I was also interviewed on a few podcasts and did a Los Angeles talk show with my new friend Shari, the delightful host, which will air on cable and Apple TV in the next couple of weeks. I’ve been in two Tesla Cyber trucks. The first time was during a swim meet my son was participating in. Tesla promoted their vehicles at the event, and I got to sit in their truck and play with the features. Then I took their performance model for a ride and it was thrilling! There is a lot of misinformation about Elon Musk floating around the internet. He’s not perfect, but I appreciate what he’s trying to accomplish, especially when the auto industry’s superpowers are working hard to shut him down. Those who have possessed tremendous power for decades do not like when disrupters come onto the scene. Yet, because of the technology boom we are living in, tech giants have become the new kings. I think Elon might have gone under if he hadn’t had SpaceX, which, according to my friend who works on jet propulsion engines at NASA, said, “Elon saved us.” Whatever your opinion, from what I’ve experienced firsthand, his self-driving cars are about to transform our world in the same way the iPhone did. The second time was after attending my Speakeasy Mastermind group in downtown
