Just as diets work against you when trying to lose weight, your mind can work against your ultimate body transformation. But the good news is that you can re-train your brain and make your mind work for you! In the process, you’ll find that you can supercharge your motivation, overcome your addiction to sugar, embrace exercise, and take control of your eating habits.

Here, then, is the #1 secret for transforming your body and losing weight… for good:

 

Let’s Go to a Movie! (Better Yet, Star in One!)

The trick to sustainable body transformation isn’t the latest diet fad or trendy exercise device; the trick is to use your mind so you can see yourself as you want to be. And the best and easiest way to do that is with this technique:

Picture yourself on-screen in an IMAX movie theatre. The screen is huge, the colors are vivid, the sounds are rich in Dolby® Digital Surround Sound, and you can feel the energy wrapping around you! But you’re not just watching this from a seat in the middle of the theatre; you are in control. Whenever you want to INCREASE the intensity of an image or scene, bring the image closer, make it BIG or wide, turn up the color intensity, and crank up the volume of the soundtrack. Imagine the image being directly in front of you and within easy reach.

To DECREASE the intensity of your imagination, do the opposite: Push the image to the side and farther away; make it distant and small and out of reach. Imagine it in dull colors or black and white. Turn down the volume or mute it altogether.

Remember, you are the one on-screen. Did you picture yourself in the first scenario as you want to be – with your body transformation complete – on that screen so large and touchable, its images vivid and the sound clear and loud? And did you do the opposite in the second scenario? Did you picture yourself as you currently are, but make the image dark and small and hard to see? If so, you’ve taken the first step to using mind tricks to achieve a healthy and sustainable weight!

 

Playing the Movie to Reduce Stress

Stress is a major factor in our lives. Dealt with in a healthy way, its effects can be minimized. But if we let stress cloud our thinking and amplify negative thoughts, it can impact our lives in ways that can ruin our health, our careers, and even our relationships.

Most people think stress is generated by external forces. The truth is, however, that stress is generated from within, by how we think about something and interpret its possible impact. Focus on what you want – like you did on that big movie screen – and you will feel more calm and secure and resourceful. You will feel more in control and capable of handling the stress because you know you can! But if you focus on what frightens or upsets or angers you, the opposite is true; you will feel frustrated, fearful, and overwhelmed. You will shut down. You will cope with the situation – with the stress – poorly, and more stress will result.

 

Using Anxiety as a Trigger

Remember this:

Anxiety is your body’s natural warning system that reminds you to re-direct your attention onto what you desire, as opposed to what you are fearful of.

While it’s important to deal with the circumstances causing you to feel stressed, it’s more important to understand that it’s your interpretations of those situations (and not the situations themselves) that are actually causing the stress. Therefore, when you feel anxiety, use that as a reminder to trigger your healthier response. Fire up that movie screen again and see yourself on the other side of the stressful situation. You’ve emerged stronger and more confident and ready to take on the great things that are happening in your life. If negative self-talk and anxiety flare up again, push them away. Make that imagery small and dark.

Intensify the positive imagery and emotions. Decrease the intensity of your negative feelings and inclination to behave or respond in a negative, self-defeating way. You can do it! You can control your mind to keep your mind from controlling you!

 

The Bottom Line

Body transformation is possible if you re-train your brain and put your mind to work for you. As I’ve said before, if you can conceive it, you can achieve it! The First Step to a Thinner and Healthier You!

Zig Ziglar once asked, “How can you hit a target if you don’t have one?” Of course, he was referring to setting goals so you can move more confidently toward them. But having a goal is only the first step on the journey to a sustainable healthy weight. The real key to successful weight loss is being able to visualize yourself already thin!

One of the main reasons people struggle to lose weight is because they have a mental image of themselves being heavy, miserable, stressed and unhappy. And what you think about becomes real – a self-fulfilling prophecy. Your thoughts expand and amplify. In other words… Where your attention goes, your energy flows. What you think about comes about. You reap what you sow! Get the picture? Good!

Dr. Wayne Dyer said, that “thoughts are things.” Unfortunately, people who struggle to get thin tend to focus on what is rather than what will be. Of course, you must come to terms with where you are in your struggle, but you can’t allow yourself to mentally dwell there or you will not be able to move toward the new and improved you!

 

Meeting the Future You

So let go of that negative image of yourself. Look beyond the person you see in the mirror today and begin to see yourself being the way you want to be. Looking the way you want to look, feeling the way you want to feel, thinking and speaking positive thoughts, behaving the way you want to behave – and having what you want to have!

See yourself already there, the goal accomplished, with all the obstacles behind you. Feels pretty good, doesn’t it? And just from this preliminary imagining, you’ll find your mood improving and your confidence building. And when that negative inner voice of fear speaks up, you can silence it with this reply: “Everything that has ever been accomplished or created first appeared as a wishful thought in the mind of a believer!”

As you continue to tune into a mental picture of yourself looking and feeling great, that picture will become clearer over time. If you need inspiration in the beginning, get out a piece of clothing you want to be able to fit back into, or find a picture of yourself when you were slimmer. Indeed, you were thinner and healthier once – you can be that way again!

If you are not a particularly visual person and have trouble picturing the new you in your mind, talk yourself through it. Repeat positive affirmations frequently. Let your voice make it real if your “mind’s eye” can’t quite get you there. Pretty soon you’ll be able to actually feel yourself being thinner, being healthier, and being more confident, as well as more active and attractive.

 

More Reasons to Master Visualization

Ultimately, of course, being healthier is the key benefit of your weight loss aspirations. But along the way, being able to imagine yourself achieving this improved lifestyle has other benefits. You’ll also be able to:

  • pre-program your mind to respond more positively and confidently in future situations. With enough reinforcing practice, you’ll be able to totally eliminate self-sabotage from your thoughts and actions before it ever begins.
  • feel the healthy emotions you want to feel right now, and tap into them to keep you focused and on track to achieve your weight loss goal.
  • stay motivated because positive mental self-conditioning is contagious even within yourself. Soon your negative inner voice will be much quieter and less persistent, drowned out by the stronger, more motivated and capable you!

 

The Bottom Line

Becoming a thinner and healthier person is possible. If you can conceive it, you can achieve it! To reach your weight loss goal, however, you must imagine that what you want is already here! You are already thin. It’s just that there is a layer of fat covering you up. But because you are approaching your weight loss journey with a new attitude and a mental picture of yourself being thin, that layer of fat will melt away like an ice cube on a hot summer day. And each day as YOU continue to shine, it melts away more and more, letting the world see what you already imagine: a slimmer, trimmer, more attractive and confident you!

Reason #6: Weighing Daily or Weekly is a Form of Self-Sabotage

It’s understandably tempting to weigh yourself frequently after starting a diet. We live in an instant gratification world, right? So we start a diet on Monday and first thing Tuesday morning take off our clothes and step on the scales. Nothing! Not an ounce lost. Or worse yet, we gain a pound or two! How can that be?

Your body is prone to natural fluctuations in weight due to many biological and nutritional factors. Different food combinations cause varying reactions in your body – and unpredictable variations in your weight. So if you weigh yourself daily or even weekly, you aren’t giving your body time to adjust to a new normal. And when you don’t see immediate results, your motivation to stay the course is destroyed. Why are you putting yourself through all this? you wonder.

Here’s some “farmer wisdom”: If you plant a seed in the ground and come back the next day or even the next week, you might not see anything on the surface. “It’s a bad seed,” you think. Wrong! If you could look beneath the surface you would discover an amazing root system being established. This is the “foundation” of the future crop. Without it, the plant will blow away in the wind once it breaks the surface. But with a strong foundation, the vitality and health of the plant is sustainable. The same is true for weight loss. Where typical diets fail again and again, with the solid foundation of my Shurr ! Success system for becoming Thinner and Happier, the roots for your weight loss success will become stronger – and so will you!

Reason #7: When it Comes to Exercise, “No Pain, No Gain,” Right? Wrong!

The desire to avoid pain is a major trigger in causing people to eat – and overeat – the wrong foods. “Comfort foods” provide temporary relief from pain (actual or perceived) or escape from the stresses of life. This is a false escape, of course. Nonetheless, when exercise accompanies dieting, as most diets recommend, it is common for the dieter to overdo the exercise part of the equation. A harder workout should yield better, faster results, you think. If it hurts, it must be working, you think. If I’m not in pain, I’m not doing it right, you think!

But here is how this combination of diet and exercise can fail you in a critical way: by overdoing it early, you will become even more frustrated by the lack of immediate results. This, in turn, will destroy your motivation and send you diving for your comfort foods as a way to cope with the frustration and physical pain.

So, when it comes to exercising, less is more in the beginning. And aerobic exercise is best, such as a 20 minute daily walk that gets your heart beating faster than normal. This will help get your body burning fat faster. It can be easy, fun and effective. (Of course, check with your physician before starting any new or expanded exercise regimen.)

 

Reason #8: Diet Programs Make You Dependent

Diets are, at best, temporary solutions. Eventually, the diet – which is designed for weight loss, not for sustaining a healthy weight – will end and you will return to your old ways of eating. If you encounter pressure and stress along the way you will return to what’s familiar even faster. Think of this as a “safety and security” factor. But did you know you can train your mind to revert to feelings of security, confidence and resourcefulness under pressure so you can experience more pleasure now and in the future? It’s true! Stay with me to learn more.

 

Reason #9: Diets Focus on Weight Loss, Not on Healthy Habits

As I mentioned above, diets are only concerned with weight loss, not on establishing a sustainable lifestyle for healthy weight maintenance. Your ultimate goal should be to engage in healthier behaviors that turn into healthy habits. Habits are sustainable because they are automatic. And by focusing on your healthy habits performance (the actions you take each day rather than how much weight you are – or are not – losing), you will transform your behaviors into habits and your habits into a healthier lifestyle. Once you’ve changed your behaviors, keep going! Don’t be like the miner who stopped digging 6 inches from reaching the gold. As you work toward your weight loss goal, find reward in the process, in the performance, in the new habits you are developing. Soon you will develop a healthy addiction to living a healthier life!

 

Reason #10: Diets Reinforce Mental Associations that Keep People Overweight

Diets cause people to become frustrated, to feel deprived, to waste money, to become extremely sore from over-exercising, and to feel “weak” due to reverting back to making poor choices under stress. In other words, dieting continually reinforces that losing weight is painful, while staying the same is more comfortable and easy. Weight loss and healthier living will be IMPOSSIBLE unless you REVERSE this mental conditioning. You must convince your mind that the true pain – MASSIVE pain – comes from staying the same. Think about it: is it really easier to stay fat? To hate the way you look? To feel exhausted all the time? To feel embarrassed by how your various body parts jiggle in public?

Again, a healthier mindset with more positive behaviors that become sustainable habits can be achieved, and YOU can achieve the weight loss you desire for healthier living!
