5 Unique Stress Busters For Busy Professionals!


Everyone’s busy, and it may feel like there’s “no time” to apply the common advice given for reducing stress. You might think, “Sure, I’d love to sit back and journal or take a long walk in nature and reflect. Yet, I’m buried with To-Do lists, emails and customer demands!”

The following five stress-relieving tools meet all three requirements for busy business professionals. They are fast, effective and require very little time. Applying these unique strategies during challenging situations will not only make you feel better, but it will also improve your productivity and performance!

#1 – Control Your Breathing. Control Your Life!

Under stress, people hold their breath or breathe shallowly through their mouth. Mouth breathing triggers the fight-or-flight response, which leads to muscular tension and an elevated heartbeat. To counteract this, breathe in through your nose to the count of four. Then slowly exhale to the count of eight. Breathe down to the bottom of your lungs, so your belly expands rather than your chest. Doing so will stimulate your body’s Relaxation Response. You’re breathing anyway. Might as well put it to work for you!

#2 – Look Up for 30 Seconds and SLOW Down

This one requires that you sit still for half a minute, yet it can save you countless hours of aggravation from being stressed out! Take the next 30-seconds to just stare up at the ceiling. Doing so quiets your mind and allows your heart to slow down. Most anxiety comes from saying scary or upsetting things to yourself in your head. Looking up tends to silence your inner voice, which produces a very calming effect. The only time you should avoid using this tool is while driving.

#3 – Bounce…

It’s not what happens in life, but how you interpret the situation that ultimately determines how you feel in the moment. When already stressed, your view of other challenging conditions will appear worse than they typically are. Instead of trying to “be positive,” which can be difficult in those moments, reclaim your peace of mind by bouncing around or stretching as wide as you can. Tense body = tight mind. Loosening the body through movement will ease both physical and mental tension. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

#4 – Create Your “S&HIT Kit”

Laughter is another fast way to loosen up. Create your Sanity & Health Inventory Toolbox that includes a collection of hilarious 1-minute videos (there’s an endless supply online) you can view to break the tension. You can also sign up for the Joke of The Day online or keep your favorite song handy for instant inspiration! Sing along with your favorite music on the way to or from work to lift your spirits or use scented candles, air fresheners, or small vials of Aromatherapy oils to stimulate calmer feelings. Your specific collection of sights, sounds, and smells will quickly improve your mood, and if “it” suddenly hits the fan, you’ll have your S&HIT ready!

#5 – Pat The Blues Away

In a sitting position, start bouncing your knees slowly up and down by pushing upward with the balls of your feet. Take turns lifting one knee, then the other as though you are a drummer whose hitting his bass drum to the count of 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. Now keep this rhythm while gently patting your hands on your thighs, rotating from left to right as you pat one leg and then the other, just like you’re doing with your feet. It doesn’t matter if your hands and feet are moving together or not.

Do this for 30-seconds and then think about what’s been upsetting you as you pat for another 15-seconds. Even though you can conjure up the situation in your mind, you’ll emotionally disconnect from uncomfortable feelings. It’s like resetting your brain. Go ahead. Attempt to get upset while making this move. The harder you try, the more you WON’T be able to.


In Review

Stress is inevitable, but suffering is optional! You have tremendous power locked in your brain, and now you have several “on the go” tools for feeling calmer and at ease. A clear mind produces higher productivity, fewer mistakes, and a better attitude at the end of the day. We should all make time for that!

It’s not what happens in life, yet how you interpret what’s happening, that matters more than anything else. If something doesn’t go the way you want it to, you can learn from it and become stronger or you can be critical and throw yourself a pity party.
I’m not judging because I’ve done both. Some of my past pity parties were epic! That’s why I’ve worked so hard on myself over the years. Anger, insecurity, and fear do NOTHING but suck the life out of you. However, when you truly discover your inner worth and you actively work to bring more VALUE into the lives of others and yourself, it creates unlimited possibilities for joy, inner peace, and gratitude.
AND this is why I’m retiring…well not really retiring. More like making a very exciting and much needed change! I believe one of the things that has made my life incredible is the willingness to leave my comfort zone time and time again. When people ask what the secret to success is, my response is often, “The more uncertainty you can handle, the more successful you WILL become!” Your DREAMS must become more important than your desire to feel safe.
I spent the first 35 years of my life trying desperately to feel safe. Yet, I still continued to take dozens of risks. God also gave me an amazing wife who was willing to push the boundaries even farther than I was and I still give her the credit for me going into business for myself. It was Stacey’s idea for me to turn a small room in our first apartment into an office, which over many years, transformed into one of the most successful hypnosis practices in the world! I’m definitely going to give her another BIG, grateful hug once I’m done writing this newsletter… 🙂

So, after 22 years of running multiple hypnosis offices, with the current one being, Indy Hypnosis Center, I’m stepping away for awhile. Thus, if you need an appointment, you’ve got until the end of May.

It’s been a fantastic experience working with so many wonderful people and I’ve learned a tremendous amount from facilitating well over 10,000 hypnosis sessions in the last ten years. Yet, in order for me to make a larger difference in the world, I need to step away from seeing one person at a time and continue my journey as a leadership consultant and speaker. I‘m helping entire companies become more empowered, which is also improving marriages, families, and communities.

How To Quickly Overcome A Setback!

There isn’t one successful person who hasn’t had setbacks. They are a part of life. Sometimes, no matter what you do or how well you perform, things will just not go your way. I used to get really upset about deals falling through, clients not showing up, or another home appliance going on the fritz.

Yet, the more I worked on myself, the more unattached I got to outcomes. All you can do is deliver your best effort. That’s it. If it doesn’t work out, try again. The secret to quickly overcoming setbacks is to focus on the value you are bringing and not on the outcome you get back!

For example, if you are working with a customer and you’ve provided all the value you can, you’ve done your job. If the customer doesn’t buy, it’s because s/he wasn’t ready or it wasn’t a good fit. You can’t force or manipulate that customer into a sale or you’ll end up with a larger problem down the road. Be happy that you now know it’s time to move on and focus your attention on the next customer who will buy from you.

Too many get stuck on why that customer didn’t buy or why things aren’t going well instead of directing their attention towards what they can do to improve the situation. Wherever your attention goes, your energy flows. If you only think about what isn’t working, you’ll end up with more things that aren’t working because that’s what you’re fixated on.

If, instead of ruminating over a lost sale, you thought, “Next!” and focused on bringing value to another person, you’ll soon have a new customer because that’s where you are placing your concerted energy. Of course, if you continue getting unfavorable outcomes, it’s smart to investigate your approach in case you need to modify it. Even the best sales professionals can find areas where they’d like to improve. They never think they already know it all and they don’t put limits on their potential.

I took my son to a Karate tournament over the weekend and watched as this courageous wheelchair-bound athlete completed his weapons kata. I found him after the competition, patted him on the shoulder, and told him what a great job he did. The young man just stared at me. We made eye contact for a few minutes, I smiled, and turned away. He didn’t say anything, yet he never broke eye contact, which is rare for a younger teenager. I wanted him to feel validated. I don’t know if it worked, yet I put it out there because that’s all I can do.

This young man could have let that wheelchair rob him of his opportunity to practice karate. Instead, not only did he take on the challenge, he also joined the Karate Competition Team. He might not of won all his matches, but he did his best and that’s all he needed to do.

Willie Jolley, a well-known motivational speaker and radio host once told me that a setback is a setup for a comeback and the singer, Billy Ocean, once said, “When the going get’s tough, the tough get going!” I’ve embraced both concepts and I encourage you to do the same.
