Don’t Make These Mistakes When Pursuing Your Goals!
After spending almost three decades helping people turn goals and dreams into a reality and I’ve learned is that success is an inside job. Yet, developing self-awareness, observational awareness, a strong belief system, and stellar communication skills seem to invest the least amount of time developing.
MISTAKE #1: Focusing only on trying to improve your external environment. It’s easy to fall for the misconception that if you just got a lucky break, met that person who’d get you the right circles, or had a better website, or if we just had a better idea, all your dreams would come true.
Yet, the truth is nobody will make you successful but YOU! And, in order to actually turn your dreams into reality, you’ll need to spend MORE of your time developing your inner self than anything else. Jim Rohn once said, “Work on your philosophy, work on your attitude, work on your personality, work on your language, work on the gift of communication, work on all your abilities and if you’ll start making those personal changes, I’m telling you, everything will change for you.”
When I started counseling, and then coaching clients, (there is a difference between the two) it became obvious that in order to make the largest impact in the shortest amount of time, I had to re-train my client’s brain for success and then teach him/her how to continue doing so. In the beginning, I spent too much time trying to convince people to “think positive.” Clients would leave feeling good, but complain at next weeks session that not much had changed.
Looking back, I feel blessed for the challenges that plagued me early in life because if it were not for those painful experiences, I would not have found the insights and “brain training” strategies found in the fields of peak performance and alternative medicine. I was taught that to create rapid, long-lasting change, you need to understand how your Unconscious Mind functions so you can “program it” to seek out and attain the goals you have.
MISTAKE #2: Chasing money, fame, and success! Rather than chasing success, learn to ATTRACT IT to you by adding massive value. This was an incredible discovery. Yet, my analytical mind was still skeptical. I needed to test out all the theories and outlandish claims many of the so-called guru’s were making. So I began practicing lots of different techniques and attended dozens of seminars, training’s, and retreats. I’ve walked on hot coals, chanted with Tibetan monks, and beat drums in sweat lodges with some friends of the Lakota tribe.
I also immersed myself in two extraordinary fields of human performance; Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming.) It was from those fields that I learned the most. From there, I spent the next 28 years helping others with every kind of challenge a human being can have. I wanted to specialize in helping people with Post Traumatic Stress, which was naive of me at the time because I didn’t know what I was getting myself in to. People who have PTSD have been through some of the worst stuff you can imagine, in fact, most of it is stuff you don’t want to imagine!
Here’s the good news! There are powerful tools that can help you overcome ANY challenge you’ve been through. From those experiences with my incredible clients, I’m convinced the human mind and spirit can TRIUMPH over any adversity because of our uniquely human ability to do one thing: We have the ability to CHOSE the meaning we give to the things that we experience.
It’s not what happens to you, but the meaning that you give to it, that matters more than anything else. You can also “shift” the way your mind re-experiences situations from the past, which gives you the freedom to change the way you feel about them. Yes, you CAN change the way you think, feel, and behave, regardless of your past or present situation. Most have no idea this is even possible, but it is! I’ve watched it happen in front of me thousands, and I mean thousands, of times!
